Solitude and kindness

January 19, 2024

Patagonia. We have been cycling for so long to get here and now, after months of desert, the landscape is dominated by lakes, snow covered mountains and pine trees. It feels normal, and incredibly surreal at the same time.

It is a true wilderness out here. Almost completely untouched. Some roads and houses on the flanks of the mountains, only a few electricity lines, no ski resorts... Yet despite the solitude (or maybe because of it), the people remain very hospitable. For instance when we stop for a break close to a house, and dogs begin to bark, usually someone inside will approach us. Not wanting to invade anyone's privacy, our natural response mechanism kicks in and we immediately start packing our stuff to be on our way. But they always stop us and ask if we need help, if everything is ok, or if we need something. One time we were even offered a pick-nick table to make our lunch spot on the side of the street just a bit more comfortable. Naturally, as true Dutchies we'd never want to impose and typically politely say "No gracias, todo bien". But it is one of the lessons you learn while cycling. People are good and are there to help you whenever you need it. Sometimes even without asking.

Patagonia is a wonderful place for cycling. Though on our current path, somehow we feel something is missing. The routes are easier. That is, they reside at lower elevation involving also less climbing, curving gently through the valleys. Fortunately, in some places, the landscape is likewise accessible on foot. Even though we are keen hikers, we haven't done much of it yet during this trip. There just was no need for it. Cycling brought us all that we wanted (sometimes even a bit more). Solitude, amazing views, steep climbs, fun descents... But here, the cycling alone leaves a longing for more. A desire to climb up and see what's beyond the peaks. Let's see how much more our legs can take. Off we go!
