All better and good to go

August 13, 2023

Back on track. After three days of recovery we hit the road again. All better and good to go.

We opt for a slightly different route. Same destination, but one that allows for a somewhat gentle start downward on tarmac to the benefit of waking up the legs. Following, however, is a steady climb of 2750m elevation gain. No "going around it" out here. Difficult choice but it seems better than heading directly into the same climb as we had previously before our little excursion back down.

The first day drop down from Oyón to Churin. Next we tackle an easy 600m climb to Chiuchin. Day 2 we start slightly overwhelmed by the 2150m gain left. The goal: get as far as we can. After a long day, we reach a farm at 4350 masl. We didn't think we would manage a day of 1700m climbing, especially not this climb being notoriously steep and heavy. We pushed almost half the way but yes yes yes, the feeling of accomplishment is amazing.

A family walks out of the farm. We ask them if we can camp on their ground. Slightly surprised by our presence a quick "si si, no problema" comes as a relief. Not many spots around to camp while the night was coming quickly, we pitch the tent and start our routine under a sky full of stars. You can't beat it.

The next day we finish the monster climb with only 450m elevation gain left up. Another pass down. This was definitely the toughest one yet. But the colors, and the happy thoughts of our lunches and chats with the Peruvians along the way make it yet again worth it big time! Not to mention the downhill, simply stunning. ¡Viva Peru!
